Tape Study: Perception Is Not Just Central Vision

Alex Pereira is a fighter known for his vision. He directly faces his opponents to keep them in his central field of vision. His primary weapon for both offense and defense is his vision. Rather than scripted or automatic attacks and defenses, he adapts to what is being presented . . . so long as he can see what's coming.

Vision alone is not perception. Perception is the interpretation and organization of information received from the environment. This includes vision, hearing, touch, taste, smell, prior knowledge, and expectations.

For example, you don't necessarily have to see the cage to know how close you are to it, you have prior knowledge and expectations to guide you. Perception is what you can see and the awareness of what you can't. It's not just what's directly in front of your central field of vision but also what's in your periphery. Even if something moves completely out of your vision, you can still interpret where you think it'll be based on prior information. That's all perception.

You don't catch a fast-moving ball because you can see it, you take the prior information from watching the release of the ball and then interpret where it'll be. Likewise, when you put the key into the keyhole of your doorknob, you don't have to look at the keyhole. Instead, you feel the knob, take the prior knowledge of looking at the keyhole, organize that information, and interpret where the keyhole will be.
