[Update (1/15/2025):
It's been a year since this mutual aid request was first sent out, and now Los Angeles is on fire. We're still here, but it's another massive setback as we deal with the continuing economic disruption and impact caused by these wildfires. Being based out of Hollywood, our primary source of income was in-person martial arts training, but that's really diminished, and each time we start to rebuild, something else has come up. Without the financial support we received last year, we wouldn't have made it this far.
Recently, we were in the midst of starting a Liberation Martial Arts training program for organizers, and we still plan to bring that vision to life despite all that's going on. Your support will not only help my family and me weather these difficult times but will also sponsor the training of an organizer. All the payment methods from last year are still active. If you've been considering becoming a paid subscriber to the Southpaw/Liberation Martial Arts project, now would be an incredibly impactful time to join.]
Hi. This is Sam. I am a content creator for Southpaw and a martial arts organizer. I am also a husband and a father to an incredible 4-year-old son. Today, I am reaching out to you with a humble heart, as my family and I find ourselves in a challenging situation.
Over the past several years, our family has faced some struggles, starting with the pandemic that temporarily halted my work. Being based out of Hollywood, the film and TV strikes that followed became another hurdle in rebuilding my clientele. Despite these setbacks, I was able to supplement my income with online martial arts training and other content. My online supporters became a much-needed lifeline for our family. Can't thank you all enough for this.
I worked as hard as possible to get back on my feet. Unfortunately, effort isn't enough. So much of where we end up is based on luck, good or bad. I know this from experience.
In the past year, our family has gone through some health emergencies and challenges, resulting in not only physical and emotional strain but also medical bills and missed work. As someone who is self-employed, the absence of work means no income. Now, we find ourselves at a point where even our lifeline is stretched thin and getting thinner.
