These two activities are intended to increase the practitioner&#8217;s action capacity for hip-led leg movement.</p><p>I find that a lot of uncontrolled or unsafe movements stem from a lack of mobility, flexibility, and motor control. When practitioners cannot access a movement comfortably, they may try to compensate with force or speed. For example, if they swing the leg hard and fast enough, they may be able to overcome their limited range of motion.</p><p>That compensation can create safety issues for both the practitioner and their partner.</p>

The practice centers the internal state. You can pause, observe, name what is happening, and let the sensation unfold at your own pace.</p><p>Contact martial arts are different. Your focus is outward. You navigate not only your internal state, but also another person, shared space, timing, distance, pressure, rhythm, and the results of your actions and inactions. With another person involved, you move together in real time, not just at your own pace.</p><p>You don&#8217;t have to search for sensations inside yourself. Sensations from another person come find you, often bringing mental noise.</p><p>That noise may be sensory: surprise, pressure, impact, touch, sound, vibration, or the sudden interruption of your movement. It may also be meaning: I was too slow. I failed. I got hit. I suck. I could have died. I am unsafe.
